Former Aero Named Head Coach

Houston 2009-10 JPEG

The Houston Aeros announced former team catpatin, Mike Yeo as their new head coach for the 2010-2011 season. Yeo served as Aeros team captain in 1999 when they brought home the Turner Cup in the IHL. He then went on to be an assistant in the Penguins organization. He was an assistant along with Todd Richards when the Penguins won the Stanley Cup in 2009.

The Minnesota Wild are excited to have Yeo joining the organization. His presence should bring great symmetry between the two organizations and should aid in advancing both clubs into their respective playoffs. Yeo has won at every level of the game and the Houston Hockey Community is hopeful he can continue that tradition in his first Head Coaching experience in the AHL.

As a side note, Yeo has two children who were both born in Houston. He is very excited to be returning to a place that he has devoted so much time and energy to improving and growing the sport.

The Houston Hockey Series will be expanding to 6 teams for the 2010-2011 season. As a result, there are a few additional roster spots available to D and C level players in the Houston area. The Houston Hockey Series is a city-wide D/C Adult Hockey league that plays the majority of it’s games in conjunction with Aeros games at Toyota Center. It is a once in a lifetime sports experience that gives you the chance to “Play Like A Pro” during the course of the hockey season. Teams being fielded this year include the defending champion Willowbrook Wild, the Space City Space Invaders, the Sugarland Hitchhikers, the Beaumont Roughnecks as well as two expansion teams. For inquiries on available roster spots, please contact Josh Young at jyoung@aeros.com or 713-361-7937. You can also ask your local rink’s Novice League coordinator for details.

Inaugural HHS Championship!

HHS Champ trophy

This Saturday April 10th, 2010 history will be made. The first ever Houston Hockey Series Champion will be Crowned!  The Championship game is between the heavily favored Willowbrook Wild and the underrated Beaumont Roughnecks.  All season it has been Beaumont who has come the closest to putting a stop to Willowbrook’s undefeated record.  In their last meeting on March 12th Beaumont was able to outscore the Wild 6-5 but the game had already been forfeited due to the fact the Roughnecks were playing with only 4 players at the beginning of the game. The Wild dominated the Sugar Land Hitch Hiker in their semi-final meeting (11-5) while the Roughnecks were able to win a close one (4-3) with a last minute goal against the Space City Invaders.  You can be sure both teams will be leaving everything out on the ice in order to take home the Cup!

All HHS teams will be in action at the Toyota Center on Saturday.  Sugar Land will take on Space City in the consolation game at 12:30 pm. The Championship game is scheduled for 2:15 pm with a Trophy ceremony after the final buzzer.  The winning team will also be dropping the puck at the Houston Aeros game vs. the Texas Stars at 7:35 pm.

It’s going to be an exciting weekend of Hockey that you don’t want to miss!

Support Youth Hockey!

HWH2

The Houston Wild Hockey Club in connection with the Houston Junior Aeros Association offers ice hockey instruction and league play for Houston area youth. This program is designed to develop character, sportsmanship, teamwork, physical fitness, self-reliance, and self-discipline.  These are all qualities that should be exemplified by all youth in the Houston area.

In an effort to bridge the gap between funding and the ability to continue to do more, the HJAHA looks to people in the local business community for their support.  Through such support, the Association is better able to provide good, clean, competitive interaction for the sport and the youth on the teams and for those that visit for local tournaments with their families from outside of Houston.

In order to continue this program the Houston Wild needs the support of its local community.  Click HERE to download a sponsorship application.
